🇪🇪 Teateleht | May 2025

Welcome to the May 2025 edition of Teateleht, our quarterly newsletter! In this issue, we shine a spotlight on what inspires us.

Let’s be honest — we all have those mornings when the alarm goes off, and instead of leaping out of bed full of purpose, we hit snooze (once… or maybe three times), roll over, and try to bargain with the day ahead. I know I do. Sometimes, we all need a little nudge — or a strong cup of coffee and some inspiration — to get moving.

This edition of Teateleht is that nudge.

We’re shining a spotlight on what keeps our wonderful community going — what lifts us out of bed, fuels our passions, and gets us doing the things that matter. From song to storytelling, committee adventures to sad farewells, we’ve got a beautiful mix of voices to share with you.

First up, our fabulous Women’s Choir is tuning up for one of the most iconic cultural events in the world — the Estonian song festival, Laulupidu! You’ll hear directly from Conductor Hilja Toom and several choir members about the journey, and what singing in Tallinn means to them. Spoiler: it’s more than just hitting the right notes.

Next, Anu Mihkelson shares a moving reflection on what it’s like to live with two cultures â€” Estonia and Australia — and how this duality has inspired her over the years. A must-read for anyone who has ever felt the tug of two homes.

Then, say hello to the newly elected Committee of the Melbourne Estonian Society! To break the ice, we each answered a few fun (and slightly revealing) questions, like what inspired us to get involved and what our favourite Estonian holiday — or snack — is. You’ll get to know us in a whole new light.

And finally, we take a moment to honour and say goodbye to Lembit Marder, a much-loved leader in our community. Lembit’s legacy is one of inspiration, commitment, and deep care for Estonian Australians. He leaves big shoes to fill, and warm memories to hold onto.

Enjoy the read — and may it inspire you, even if just to get out of bed a little earlier tomorrow.

Cheers,
Kristel Alla
